Engineers Required! Is Blizzard Planning To Develop A New First-Person Game?
The career website of Blizzard is currently advertising two new positions namely “Lead Software Engineer, Engine” & “Lead Software Engineer, Tools”. The two openings are listed under the title “Unannounced games/ projects”. Though the job opening mentioned first displays an error page while the second one is still active. Blizzard is relating this to an opportunity to work on an “unannounced project that utilizes robust first person engine”. Is Blizzard hinting towards developing a new first-person shooting game?
The job description continues asking the applicants that they need to
demonstrate the ability to lead a team of engineers to success, has a vision for how tools should be built and has an unwavering passion for developing content creation tools,” and also “previous experience working on first-person or other action-oriented games.
The company developed their very own engine for their FPS, Overwatch but it seems that they are not willing to reuse it or modify it for the new project. Now the question arises whether or not Blizzard will use its existing IP.
WarCraft, StarCraft, Diablo and Overwatch have their own characteristics, each game gets a continued support by the developer. Except for Overwatch none received the first person iterations, but the stellar success of Blizzard FPS team may have caused the company to change the perspective.
Could Diablo and WarCraft get Skyrim treatment? Or is it the Marine-based StarCraft shooter on the way? Whatever it is looming inside the walls of Blizzard, it is improbable that we can have more information shortly.
